Negotiation is not one of the easiest things for job seekers to do, or for anyone to do for that matter. It is something that does require a lot of effort and a lot of time. When you are looking for a job or if you already have one and want to negotiate for above the minimum wage, you need to know how to convince the employer that you are worth the extra money and that you bring something to the company that is well worth paying a little more for.
You need to be prepared and knowledgeable when trying to get a higher wage. You can do this by doing your homework. You need to do some good research on jobs like yours with other companies. Check out the want ads in your local newspaper and find jobs like yours and require the same experience that you already have. Check on these jobs and see how much that they are paying their employees for the same kind of work.
You can also talk with other people you might know that use to work there and see how long it took for them to get more money. Once you have done your research, you should then figure out an amount above the minimum wage that you want to ask for. However; don’t ask for more than what seemed to be the average you came up with.
Before you go in to talk to your employer make sure you have prepared a list of all of the things you feel that you have already accomplished for the company. If this is a new job, then that list should be all of the things you accomplished with your last boss and their company. Make sure to put the things that you have done and the benefits that you think the company has received by the contributions you gave.
You should also include reasons why you think you do or can give more to the company than others. Whatever you do though when you are writing this list, don’t make yourself off as being too good for the company or bragging about how good you are.
Sit down with a friend or family member and try practicing asking for the higher wages. Ask them to look over your list of notes and to honestly review them for you. Make sure that you don’t add any personal reason for you asking for this increase in wages. The goal is to prove how important you are to the company and what you can do for them.
If this is not a new job, ask your employer if you can speak with them about something important and schedule a time that will be convenient for your employer and not so much at your convenience. The reason for this is that it’s going to take more than just a few minutes of yours and their time. For example, don’t ask to meet your boss at the end of the day, even your boss wants to go home.
Once you have that meeting and it’s time to sit down and have the discussion, the first thing you should do is thank them for taking time out of their busy schedule to meet with you and tell them how much you appreciate it. Then let them know why you wished to have this meeting and then go on with explaining the reasons you are wanting to talk to them about a wage increase.
Get right to the heart of it and don’t drag it on. Explain why you feel you are worth considering for a raise and what you have to offer. If you are denied, it’s alright, take the denial politely and you should ask your employer what you can do to earn more money and take the advice and move on.
