A while back you may have had to quit a job due to illness or for the fact you wanted to stay home and take care of your kids. Whatever the reason, you may now be wanting to join other job seekers and try and find a job again. You may however; in your quest for employment might discover that the work force and the industry that you were once in may have changed quite a bit since the last time you were gainfully employed and it may be a lot harder to find work. You are going to have to make sure that you include the time you have been unemployed and make sure that you add all of the things that you did that took up your time while you were not working. Make sure that you try and include activities that you might think a company might be interested in seeing that you were involved with. Volunteer work is always something employers like seeing on a person’s resume. Make sure that your cover letter includes the reasons for your gaps in your employment record.
Do some good research on the type of work you are interested in and see what the up to date requirements are for the position now. If you discover that there are additional skills required now it would be in your best interest if you wee to take a class so that you could learn the skill prior to applying for any job that might be available.
Start making a list of the different companies that you think you might like to get a job with and then go and see if there are any openings by checking out their websites. Generally they have sections on their sites that will say “Job Opportunities” or “Career Opportunities”. If they don’t have something like that then simply call the company’s human resources department and ask them if there are any job opportunities and ask what the requirements are, then ask if you can send them your resume.
Even if you are a person who doesn’t like those social networks out there, you might discover that the different types of professional ones online could be of benefit for you and your job search. One of the best would be Linkedln. Here you can even display your resume and then get to know professionals that frequent the sites. These professionals might be able to lead you in the right direction for a job opening, or they may even have something to offer you themselves.
Even if you have some great skills, remember that you haven’t been in the work force for quite some time so you might want to start applying for the lower level job openings. This is a way to get your foot in the door and then have the shot at moving into the position you really want at a later date.
