Just because you have joined the large group of job seekers that are out looking for work does not mean that you are required to spend every last minute of your day looking for that job. If your focus is nothing but looking for work you are bound to get burned out quickly and this could even leave you depressed, especially if your job search drags on for a long period of time. Below you'll find a few things to help you stay active and refreshed during what can be a really stress filled time in your life.
Don't fool yourself, jobs aren't going to find you so yes, you will have to set specific amounts of time during the day to do your job search. But still, that does not mean you have to focus on this twenty-four hours a day, every single day of the week. You need to treat your job search time as if it were your job and don't go beyond that time you schedule for job hunting.
It's important that you try to keep yourself physically active. This is going to help keep the depressed feelings away. This doesn't mean that you need to go to a gym, just go for a walk every day or do things in the garden or yard that will keep you active. Any kind of activity is going to make you feel a lot better.
If you have feelings of anger building up with regards to the loss of your job, do something with that anger by doing things that you needed to do before when you were working. If there are repairs that need to be done, do them, you have the time. You'll be able to feel like you've accomplished something and this will help get rid of some of the angry feelings.
Now is a good time to give some of your free time to volunteering. Consider being a volunteer at your local animal shelter if you are an animal lover. They always appreciate someone who wants to lend a helping hand.
Go to assisted living facilities and share some of your time with the elderly, there are some that have no one to visit them and just you stopping by to say hello could make their entire day. Not only will those around you benefit but the feeling of helping someone else will help build good feelings inside yourself.
Take the time to get to know your family better. Often when we are working full time we forget to sit down and have time with our families because we are tired and need some time to ourselves. During your unemployment however; you will have plenty of time to play with the kids, take walks with your wife or husband. Make sure to talk a lot with your family and friends and make sure that they are aware of any feelings you might be having with regards to your employment status.
