It happens all the time, that annoying co-worker, every place of work has one and you know that to be the truth. However, have you figured out just the right way to handle them without getting into a huge fight or doing something that might jeopardize the security of your own job. After all, you don’t want a major blowout that leaves you out in the colder with all the other job seekers. Here are a few things that might help you to cope with that annoying employee.
First and foremost, your best bet is to try and do your best to simply stay away from them. There is no code or law that says that you have to interact with every single person that you work with. You can be polite without having to feel like you have to stand around the water cooler having a chit chat with them or going out to lunch with them. The less contact you have with someone that annoys you the better off you’re going to be.
If the annoying person happens to work right in the same area that you do and they get to the point that it starts to interfere with your ability to concentrate on your work, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you expressing your concerns about what they are doing to them. Just make sure that you do your best to be as polite and pleasant as you can when you approach them about their behavior. If they happen to be talking too loud for instance let them know that you need to be able to concentrate on your work and you would appreciate it if they would please lower their voice a little bit. You can jokingly say that it’s because of your poor attention span, or whatever to make it sound less like you are whining at them.
If all of your politeness and avoidance tricks don’t work and this person continues to do things that are disruptive and make it difficult for you to work, you may have to take it to someone who can do something about it. You boss or their boss if they have a different supervisor. Of course you might want to consider warning them first that if they can’t stop from doing the certain things they are doing that you might have to take a visit to the boss’s office.
If everything fails, and even your boss can’t seem to help then it might be a good idea for you to let your boss know that you would like to either be moved to a different location in your office or to be moved to an entirely different department. Remember, this is a last resort, only if nothing else works.
During all of this, you might want to stop and think if maybe you simply have some sort of unrealistic expectation for this employee. Maybe it could be because you are simply unwilling to be more accepting of this person and the quirks that they might have. After all, this person might find some of the things that you do are annoying as well.
