Like most job seekers, everyone wants to make what they think that they are worth and it is your right to be able to get fair pay. A lot of people though, don’t understand that when you are on your job search and are called in for an interview that they don’t always have to stay with the employer and his bottom line offer.

There are a lot of times when you actually can negotiate how much money you feel better fits your personal needs.

Before even considering the job you should carefully review the offer of employment and be sure that the details of the pay. If the amount that is being offered seems to be a decent amount you more than likely shouldn’t even consider trying to get more money for the new job.

Before you go in for the interview make sure that you have done your research on the kind of work you will be applying for. Check out other companies and find out what their average pay scales are for similar work and similar skills that you have. This will help you figure out whether or not the salary you might be offered is fair. You can also use this information to your advantage by presenting it to the employer if their offer falls far below the average.

Whatever you do, don’t try to negotiate a salary if you have not been offered the job. If you do something like this, your chances of being offered the job will probably dwindle, even if you are the most qualified of all the candidates.

When you are offered the job, you should only base your negotiation on your strengths. If you are better at talking with someone then feel free to do the negotiation through talking but if you feel you express yourself better on paper, it’s OK to offer them a written negotiation instead.

Make sure that you also ask the employer about the different kinds of perks that are available for the job if they have decided they cannot offer you more than what they have already put down on the table.

Sometimes different perks can compensate for the lack in pay. Maybe higher bonus for joining the company, if you can telecommute or good paid vacations can all compensate for the lower pay.

Always remember, you have not accepted the job at this point and you do not have to feel obligated to the employer, they are just another person sitting in the same room talking to you. So feel free to stick with your convictions.

If you really believe that you cannot accept the job at the salary offered, let them know and politely thank them for their time and just go on your way. In some cases, if you really are the one they are looking for you may get a call the next day with a better salary offer.

Always remember to be honest and professional when you are trying to negotiate and never make any kind of demands because that is a sure fire way of being shown to the door without even being considered for the job then or at any other time.

And never mention what other employers who are interested in hiring you when you are trying to negotiate. This is not going to make them feel jealous or guilty, instead it is only going to lead to resenting you instead.
