You have finally left the other job seekers behind and your job search has come to an end because you are one of the lucky few that finally, through all of your efforts has become once again, gainfully employed. Now that you have that job, you find yourself completely stressed out about that first day on the job. Here are some tips to help you get through that first day returning to the work force.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to make sure that you dress nice and in something that makes you feel good about yourself. Even if it turns out that the attire is more casual when you get there, it’s OK to be overdressed on your first day rather than be under dressed. It’s easier to work yourself back down to more casual than it is to work you way back up to more formal wear.

A lot of people go to their new job under the impression that they need to befriend someone the first day they get there. This is however; not a good idea. You don’t have enough time to find out who the person really is and you could end up befriending the office crazy or gossip.

When it comes to your first lunch on the job, even if you get invited out to lunch by someone, politely turn down the offer your first day of work, unless of course it’s the boss doing the asking, then by all means accept that offer. But wait a little bit before you start going to lunch with fellow employees.

Do your best not to ask a ton of questions. Try to do your best in figuring things out on your own that first day, unless of course it’s something really big. Make sure to be friendly and smile often and make sure to speak to someone when they speak to you, but take note of your surrounds and other workers before you let your true personality loose in the office. It may turn out that you’ll discover that for instance your particular kind of humor is not well accepted in the office you are working in.

Make sure if there is an orientation that you are prepared for it, don’t depend on the new job to give you paper and pen for the orientation, make sure to bring your own items you might need for that first day whether it’s pens, papers, sticky notes, whatever. Just be prepared and don’t be asking to borrow stuff from other people the first day you get there.

Make sure that if you are a woman, don’t overdo the makeup, just wear a small amount and wear any more than say what your grandmother would have approved of. Also make sure that you go light on your perfume and this goes for the men, you need to go light on the cologne or after shave. You never know how people might react to an overpowering scent.

Final note: Whatever you do, never, ever suck up to the boss the first day on the job. It’s never a good idea in the eyes of any employee but on the first day, that is definitely one of the biggest no-no’s you can make on your first day.
